“Maya’s new friend will be excited to see us—her friends always are,” Opal said. She smoothed her dress so it would glimmer.

Nugget straightened his hat.

Dazzle shook his tail so it would be fluffy. A few sparkles fell off his tail. He hoped Maya wouldn’t mind.

The door opened. “And this is my room!” Maya said. “It’s a bit messy because I’m still unpacking.”

A new girl stepped into the room. She looked about Maya’s age.

But she didn’t look happy.

Isabelle looked at the picture books on Maya’s dresser.

“We went to the library this morning,” Maya explained. “These are the books that I checked out. We can read them if you want.”

“I only read chapter books now,” Isabelle said. “But that was nice of you to get some books for your little brother.”

Maya opened her mouth. She didn’t want to tell Isabelle that she had borrowed the books for herself, though. What if Isabelle made fun of her?

Maya closed her mouth.

“And we borrowed Wizard Wonderful and Dazzle, too.” Mateo ran over to get Nugget. “They’re Book Buddies. The fairies are going to have a party to welcome them to the neighborhood!”

“We waited for you to play, too,” Maya said.
